How to Stand up to Cancel Culture, and Why You Must (Happy Thanksgiving)

As this podcast is just getting started, hopefully I’ll eventually figure out what it is supposed to be about. For now, it’s just a way to communicate with you lovely people without it being words tapped out on a screen. You can’t tell tone or mood with words. You imagine them. Which is great, for fiction, but not so great for communication. That’s why I think Youtube and podcasts are so popular. We need to hear each other.

Cancel culture is a force that must be reckoned with, and indeed it will be. When the story is told years in the future you will be asked whether you went along with it, stood up to it or stayed silent. You should probably decide that now.

Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving, anyone who might be reading this.

Introduction and Episode One

I found myself in a weird place right around May of this year. My perspective completely changed. I didn’t really understand why at first. At some point I realized just how insular the feedback loop of media/social media had become. It’s hard to explain to people who are still very much inside that loop of information in a country that is sharply partisan. To get the fuller picture, or anything close to reality, one has to find a way to see things from each side, or each perspective and not just stay inside one bubble or the other. Over the last four years there have been two realities Americans are living through. CNN, MSNBC, the New York Times presents one reality. Fox News and various podcasts present entirely another. Somewhere in between these two things is the whole story.

In this first episode, I introduce myself, my background and why I’m doing this podcast. Then I talk about the difference between social media under Obama and social media under Trump. I’m sure that much of what I say will be somehow controversial, given the two separate worlds we live in but I think it’s necessary for all of us to try to break up what is becoming a dangerous situation – and even Biden being elected probably won’t change it that much.

Anyway, hope you enjoy it. This episode is around one hour but the future episodes might be shorter. Or I will offer two versions – a longer one and a shorter one.
