Well, it's hard to tell how legitimate any election is when you have as incredibly loosey-goosey, integrity-free procedures as we do. No other advanced nation, and even almost no "non-advanced" nations have the effective "honor system" for voting that stretches out over a month, with mail and harvesting and motor-voter and the like, not to mention the obvious, very bad look shenanigans that we both saw and that also have recently been uncovered. So, naturally, much of our populace, for very, very good reasons, have lost confidence in the reliability and honesty of our elections. Moreover, when you have an entire political party engaging in extremist rhetoric (Nazi, fascist, celebrating assassinations, assassination attempts and riots, etc.), it's quite easy to believe that party maybe, just might, be capable of and unashamed of cheating.
So, yes, the GOP may well lose the midterms for a variety of reasons including the one you mention as well as it's the historical norm, but also because of the Iran war (which I believe was very bad judgment substantively and politically). But to trivialize the low regard the populace has in our elections is also bad judgment because there are, in fact, very good reasons for it that should be corrected but one party will oppose any improvement in vote integrity with all its resources and fervor.

But whoever it was still wields incredible power in the Democratic Party elite (the fact that we still don’t know who he/they are is one measure of their continuing power), and we should obviously assume he/they want to run the country again.
