I’m not sure where you are in California in reference to the potential tsunami. Please stay Safe Sasha. I’m keeping everyone in prayer.

Alarms just went off in Long Beach, Ca. We’re on the fourth floor, on the water, but shouldn’t see any action behind the breakwater. After all the recent hoopla over the shakes under Mount Rainier, this is a good time for everyone to start paying attention.

tsunami warning was lifted in Long Beach. It's a south facing beach with a breakwater. We're going to have 1 ft waves. Surf's up!

The first waves will hit Hanalei on the north shore of Kauai at 7:10 pm local time. I’m in Honolulu, where we’ll see a rising sea a few minutes later.

When northern Japan experienced a record-breaking earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster on March 11, 2011, Hawaii was affected as well. The marinas by the airport were wiped out. I took my boat a few miles offshore and didn’t feel a ripple, but the next morning the authorities wouldn’t let us into the swirling maelstrom in the harbor.

It’s good to see that the local government is taking this one seriously. There is a warning that is broadcast to our cell phones every few minutes. I can hear the emergency sirens going off on towers around downtown Honolulu. First responders’ vehicles race by with their sirens blaring.

When Lahaina, Maui was devastated by the wildfire two years ago, the emergency manager on that island decided NOT to implement his state-of-the-art warning system in the fear that the people would consider it to be a tsunami warning and then move to higher ground…in the direction of the fire. That was a tragic misjudgment that cost the residents and tourists in Lahaina dearly.

Really scary!

My youngest child (23 years) moved to Sitka, Alaska-which is on pacific coast. I think Sitka will be ok but time will tell 🙏🏻

The blessing is that everyone in potential harm’s way is being given a head’s up. Texas (flooding) didn’t get that. If a big one occurs off Oregon/Washington coast someday, we will not have this kind of warning.

Waves (if they come) will hit Astoria, OR @ 11:40pm PST.

Tsunami warning in Hawaii which is serious but watch or advisory on the US west coast which is much less serious.

Thanks Sasha. It’s much more than California on the West Coast. We’re in Port Angeles, WA and under an “advisory.” The Tsunami.gov site shows Alaska, Washington, Oregon and Northern California in the watch. (Along, with the west coast of Canada.)

Down here in Oregon, authorities are predicting 2 to 3 ft waves above normal that could persist for 15 hours, with 1st hitting around 11:35pm PST. So, not a major tsunami threat, but do stay away from beach. As comparison, the 2011 Japan tsunami was 6 ft waves and caused considerable damage up and down Oregon coast.

What I'm seeing, and please anyone correct me, is that Hawaii might see a tsunami of 4-8 feet and the West coast will maybe be half that. It should not be ignored, but every Hawaiian and West Coast shores see swells this size at some point every year, without catastrophic results.

I've gleaned this from the official sites, which honestly for me were difficult to decipher.

That does not mean folks should ignore this threat... I mean, get your kids and yourselves off the beach. But I'm not getting 'catastrophic' out of this.

Again, anyone who has a different take on this please provide the info you have.

The Japan quake tsunami caused damage in California harbors at a foot or two height. That's not the 4th floor. But I believe earthquake strength scale increase is logarithmic not geometric.

Just got this weird "security message" from substack with a "security code"... Is substack on the facebook path, on the path to enshittification, as happens inevitably with all tech megacorps?

"Here's your verification code to sign in to Substack:

XXXXXX

This code will only be valid for the next 10 minutes. If the code does not work, you can use this login verification link:"

Is it the passwordless login flow?

Perhaps it's some sort of 2FA, but it's pretty clumsy. Generally, to do a login like that, you log the user out, ask for a fresh userid and password, then send a 2FA code to their mail... just sending a 2FA code to a user mailbox is a bit odd.

I was on Oregon coast when the Japan one happened. Up all night. Coast Guard driving on beach telling people to leave. Left early but wanted to stay. Water was really active in middle of the night but no Hollywood ridiculous 1,000 foot waves.
