Meh. The Democrats won in states they have voter registration advantages in - and, in fact, most of the races were far closer than they should have been.

I know the mainstream media / DNC Communications Office (but I repeat myself) are spinning this as some great repudiation of Trump and the GOP - but take a step back and look at what actually happened: The Democrats beat back Republican challengers in Democratic strongholds. New York, New Jersey, California. Retook a governorship and AG in Virginia that the Republicans only managed to win because of the Democrats' war on parental rights an election cycle ago.

Yawn.

The Democrats' path to retaking the U.S. Senate or even the House next year is ... unlikely at best (although I never underestimate the possibility of the Republicans doing something truly stupid).

And even in California, what did the Democrats actually gain? By pretending Texas wasn't redistricting to match California, New York and Illinois' own existing radical gerrymandering, Newsom managed to motivate North Carolina, Missouri and Indiana to follow his lead - all but erasing any Democratic gains in California. And since Democratic-controlled states are already so heavily gerrymandered, there aren't really any more Democratic seats to fabricate.

Look for more red states to now jump into the game and add a net gain of Republican-leaning House districts before next year. (And pending lawsuits against California Prop. 50 may upend it yet - the language is openly partisan, in violation of the state Constitution, and the Legislature openly ignored rules requiring a bill be introduced and finalized in time for all legislators to have time to study it.)

If Prop. 50 is overturned while the Republican redistricting stands up in court, don't think other Democrats won't hold Newsom to blame for that mess ....

jabster's avatar

VA is a special case because of all of the unpaid federal workers in NoVa, who are already predisposed to blame the GOP for all of their ills.

Carl L. McWilliams's avatar

Unwoke in Idaho: Can you imagine what a hot civil-war on American soil would look like? I posit America is under attack, from without and within. Because Barack Hussein Obama, Kamala Harris, Valerie Jarrett and Pete Buttigieg are all the children of Communists. And, because the enemies of the West -- such as China, Iran, North Korea, Russia and Qatar -- know they cannot yet defeat the US in direct military conflict; I hold BHO and Valerie Jarrett (and continuing under four years of O'Biden's Administration), have engaged in "asymmetric warfare" - and BHO/Jarrett have embedded the DEEP STATE with Marxists/Socialists who are "down for the revolution". The Chinese Communist Party has spent billions since Bill Clinton's presidency endowing chairs, professors and student scholarships, hijacking our universities, perverting societal values and turning our children against our country and us. Through America's open southern border, their "asymmetric warfare" smuggles huge quantities of fentanyl from China that kill 90,000 Americans a year. While under Biden millions have infiltrated in groups of military-aged men. The CCP has weaponized social media apps such as TikTok to promote self-mutilation, drug use and hostile Marxist ideologies among our university aged youth.

They bribe our elected and appointed officials. They pay people to riot in our streets, block roads, bridges and even airports. They have openly started shouting "Death to America" in New York, Chicago and Michigan. Our governments and institutions are failing us. The shrugs from the global elite class are an invitation to the enemies of the Free World to exploit the disarray currently underway. Our enemies are determined. They are relentless. They have a plan and are executing it every day.

Dems winning in deep-blue states is dog bites man.

ScottyG's avatar

I like your half FULL glass of lemonade! Not sure how much re districting will work when people are fleeing those blue states.

Jim Trageser's avatar

That's another aspect - New York, Illinois and California are all set to lose seats following 2030 census. Not sure how having a bunch more minority members in the House helps the Democrats ...

Trapped in IL's avatar

Agreed, BUT voters fleeing these states need to re-evaluate their positions and realize WHY they needed to move. In other words, Democrats shouldn’t turn a red state blue.

KEVIN PEARSON's avatar

Calm.down. after decades of Democrats pouring money into Texas claiming it will turn blue, trump got closer to flipping new york than the Giggler got to Texas or Florida.

An article from Tennessee lamented the fact that population growth in rural Tennessee was diluting the liberal influence in the state from Nashville and Memphis making Tennessee even more conservative

Like the Great migration after British India achieved independence, we will see conservatives fleeing blue states and liberals fleeing red states.

The Supreme Court upheld Tennessee's ban on juvenile gender affirming care. That will cause liberals that want to mutilate their kids to leave red states

Alice Ball's avatar

I'm from Nashville & still have family there, and I live in Memphis----these are the two cities that vote blue but for different reasons. All the libs hate it that the state is red and will never be blue. Dems are way too radical now..Nashville filled with NY, CA, IL, and they destroyed the housing market.

Good analysis. I'll add the NYC mayoral contest that went to Mamdani. He is now the face of the Democrat party - a wealthy unabashed communist, antisemite, and foreign-born hater of America. Yeah, that will play well across the country.

Broadcast his smiling mug everywhere. This is your Democrat party, America.

Walter Stock's avatar

Yeah, the gerrymandering wars are stupid all the way around.

Hebrides' Eilidh NicDhòmhnaill's avatar

True, but some context is missing. A few examples:

About a week ago, Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ) was polling 1-5 points higher than her competition but once all votes were tallied, won by 13 points.

Abigail Spanberger (D-VA), dispatched her opponent, Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears (R-VA) by 15, exceeding polls by 5+points, which is outside the margin of error.

Elsewhere in Virginia, it was a Democratic sweep. In fact, one could call it a Democratic wave. Ghazala Hashmi will take over as lieutenant governor; she also won by double digits, outperforming Republican John Reid by 11.4 points, 55.6% to 44.2%. Hashmi will become the first person of Asian descent, and the first Muslim, to hold statewide office in Virginia. This is not your grandparents' Confederacy, folks.

And in the AG race, it turns out that AG-elect Jay Jones (D) didn't actually have that much reason to be nervous. The race was tight early in the evening, primarily because the votes from white, rural areas were counted first. However, Jones eventually pulled away, defeating incumbent Republican Jason Miyares by 6.6 points, 53.1% to 46.5%. Not quite as big a margin as for Jones' two new colleagues, but still a comfortable margin.

The really blue-wavy part of the Virginia election, even more so than the laughers for governor and lieutenant governor, was the elections for the legislature. As in New Jersey, the state Senate was not up, but the House of Delegates was. And there, the GOP really took it in the teeth. The Democrats flipped 13 seats (with one still left to be called), giving them a majority of at least 64-35.

Mamdani won the NYC election comfortably, taking 50.4% of the vote to 41.6% for Cuomo and 7.1% for Republican Curtis Sliwa. Obviously, that means that even if all the Sliwa voters had migrated to Cuomo (something they were clearly not interested in actually doing), it wouldn't have changed the outcome.

There were six other major cities, besides New York and Minneapolis, that held mayoral elections yesterday, and it was a sweep for the Democrats (or, in some cases, the Democrats who had to pretend to be nonpartisan). In Cincinnati, incumbent Aftab Pureval (NP, but really D) won by 54.4 points. In Atlanta, incumbent Andre Dickens (NP, but really D) won by 78.9 points. In Detroit, Mary Sheffield (NP, but really D) won by 54.4 points. In Pittsburgh, Corey O'Connor (D) won by 75 points. In Buffalo, Sean Ryan (D) won by 49.3 points. And in Jersey City, the top five finishers were all Democrats pretending to be nonpartisan. The top two, Councilman James Solomon (29%) and former governor Jim McGreevey (25.4%), will advance to a runoff. Obviously, large cities tend to skew very Democratic, but even allowing for that, these are some very large margins.

Prop 50 passed by a wide margin in CA. CBS did an exit poll where they asked "Yes on 50" voters to identify the reasons they voted yes and well, 75% voted yes to oppose Donald Trump, 70% to oppose Republicans: 70%, 62% to support Democrats & 41% to support Newsom.

So blue stayed blue but by MOARRR.

Andrew P's avatar

I don't know how next year will turn out. Too many unknowns. But the big redistricting push is also supercharged by the VRA case currently before SCOTUS. I don't know what the court will decide and whether it will be in time to redraw districts for the midterms, but that is a big wildcard there.

I have read "The Rise and Fall of the 3rd Reich". Every page. I have read "I Will Bear Witness" by Victor Klemperer. Every page. And I am frightened. The Communists control the media and the educational system from kindergarten through college. I am a Psychologist/Scientist, and I understand the power of indoctrination and 24/7 propaganda. Like Josef Goebbles said, you can tell a lie 1000 times, and it becomes the truth. Scientists call it The Principle of Illusory Truth. That is why the young people can support something so absurd as Islam. And why John Brennan can lie into your face about the existence of the Hunter Biden laptop. I have a copy of the contents, published by Marco Polo. (now scrubbed from the Internet). And the first pages are the forensic analysis, signed and sealed, because they knew it would be challenged.

I moved to Vermont to help the kids with the grand kids, and I read the local papers. So I find little comfort in the relatively small group of educated people that constitute Sasha's audience. Vermont has two groups that dominate state politics: Liberal and Progressive. That's right. Liberal is not Left enough. You should read the contributions of the citizens. Yeah, and they loves their Bernie. It's sickening.

Mao said: "Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun." Our own Communists understand this. They rid themselves of that pesky Charlie Kirk who was getting in the way of their indoctrination efforts, and Trump lives only due to a random miracle. 3rd Reich revisited. Do you remember the bilateral commission that was going to get to the bottom of that assassination attempt? Yeah, right. We are only a few centimeters away from a Kamala Harris presidency. And after 4 yrs. of a senile mannequin masquerading as a POTUS. You had a puppet POTUS and VP staring you in the face. Yeah, they can get away with that. And more.

It's naive to think that millions of illegal immigrants were chauffeured here out of benevolence. Instead, they were ushered in to protest and vote, illegally or not. That's why the Democrats are fighting so hard to keep them, and to eliminated standards for voting. So that their votes give the illusion of "Democracy". Have you been following the events in England? That's what you get from inviting millions of people with a completely different culture.

So yeah, I'm frightened. And I'm not convinced that this coordinated attack on our country can be fought with words. Didn't work for the Germans or the Chinese.

Julia's avatar

Nah, you don't need to usher illegals to protest and vote, too much work. I live in a Hispanic area with a high percentage of non-citizens, those protestors (predominantly white) never come here. You may think they protest ICE... but they prefer upper class, safe areas. As per voting, I'm a witness that people who swear they have never voted, have a voting record. It's sufficient to have somebody's name and address to register and vote for them. In the area run by the Democratic party elections and ballots are under their full control.

PKsweets's avatar

Exactly

Democrats churn the outrage and violent marching

First indoctrination in schools

Then payments from all the NGO’s with taxpayer dollars to run around and protest whatever

is the flavor of the day

This IS the job — just like BLM

Knew this would happen. The Republicans are busy trying to clean up messes that most people don’t really care about because they involve rational thought and a close look at the rule of law. But honestly, did anyone expect VA & NJ to go red?

The White House and Republicans in Congress need to learn to play the game better - although it will be hard with MSM totally in the pockets of liberals and without the mobilizing power of Charlie Kirk.

Brian M's avatar

With MSM the answer is simple. Destroy them. Eliminate their ability to propagandize. Do it by whatever means possible, short of violence. The courts work great. Court-shop, like the Left does, to get the most favorable venue and then sue them until they are bankrupt, like Trump has taught

It's called the 10th Amendment. It was unconstitutional when Obama did it in Ferguson, too. I don't play partisan games here.

Nonsense. I'm just following the Bill of Rights. It's a good read, you ought to try it in your spare time. Wait until you get to the 5th Amendment, which entitles all people to due process of law, which is clearly not being exercised in this instance.

douglas conklin's avatar

You’ve now changed your claim, which adds dishonest to deranged.

You also haven’t explained anything. You have not explained how deporting people with final deportation orders violates due process.

You are nothing but a shill and a troll, and disgusting.

To the average democrat politician, pain is the preferred method of "getting out the vote." They simply don't care how many people have to suffer and even die to achieve their objective. Pete said there would have to be pain at the gas pump to force people to go electric. Schumer keeps the government shut down to hurt SNAP recipients to use that against Trump in particular, republicans in general. It's all about causing pain and then using it.
