Unfortunately, I think these charges and disputes are the cost of doing business. Don’t take it as an insult to your integrity. A few bad apples sneak in when your subscription base grows. It sucks. It costs you money. But I think every author faces the same problem. You may want to check in with other paid authors, as I am offering spit-ball advice from the comment section.
I understand where you’re coming from, but the crux of the problem lies with Substack. I’ve been on Substack about (6) years, and about two years ago I got distracted, tapped an S/S default tab and a minute later had a $500 charge on my credit card. C&C was very good about it, but dealing with S/S (who caused the problem) was difficult and ineffective. Your real beef is probably with the S/S system. . - a big Sasha fan.
Hello, I was just looking at my charges for the week and I'm curious if the title that shows "Free Thinking Valley" is confusing people so they maybe dispute it? Thank you for the great writing.
All I can think of is sometimes on a bank statement things look nothing like the thing we have subscribed to. Perhaps in their hurry to get rid of something they cant identify they go that way, which the banks make easy for them. Not sure what your charge looks like on the bank statement but that might be something to alert readers to if it is way different? I am not planning to unsubscribe so I didn't look (cant even remember which bank card its on :-)
I hate that you have to keep dealing with this! thanks for recommending Jerm...I am enjoying him too!
There has to be a better way. Damn banks. Bad enough dining out has become practically impossible because of the banks and their swipe fees. Remember this when you go into the voting booth…it was during the Biden admin/covid that all of these excess fees became common.
Any better way to can collect without using Stripe/Bank of America ?
Good thing you keep reminding folk. Some folk need to be reminded, and new subscribers need to learn. Sasha is generous and more than reasonable in what $$$ she expects or hopes to receive from those of who subscribe and/or read her essays and otherwise leave tips.
Visa typically charges sellers a fee ranging from $15 to $100 for each chargeback dispute, depending on various factors. Additionally, if a seller's dispute ratio exceeds certain thresholds, they may incur further penalties from Visa's monitoring programs. I don't think people know this.
This has to be so frustrating and it sure is an unfair system. I'm sorry people keep doing this to you.

Wait, why would anyone UNsubscribe???
Could be deliberate…
Have a wonderful trip. My tip may buy a tank of gas - if you don’t pay CA prices🙂
This from a internet search:

Lots of stressed folks now, don't take it too seriously.
