10 years ago, I told a friend the news media was an enemy of the Republic. That was the end of a friendship.

Trump was right when he called the Media the "Enemy of the People". He was ripped for that as being unConstitutional (1st amendment protection). But Trump himself has a right to say anything he wants. Being President does not end your 1st Amendment rights

A seemingly small, but important correction: Trump said "Fake news is the enemy of the people." That is a certainly true statement. It's just that so many media bobbleheads immediately self-identified with "fake news" that they took it as a personal insult, as well as a condemnation of the entire field.

Richard's avatar

You are correct about the quote but actually the distortion of the quote by the media is closer to the truth. A self own by the media.

Rather like Sophie Cunningham stating, ‘I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn't have to go against biological men’ and everyone—everyone—knew who she was talking about. Especially the folks caught mid-sentence declaring ‘trans women are women’. We really do know what what’s going on. It’s how long we’ll pretend not to that’s the issue.

Brian M's avatar

"Fake News" is all the legacy media except for Fox, in Trump's eyes (the same list Sasha gives us above). He has been clear about that

Hoax season is back. Cornell is the new Duke lacrosse, UVa frat, and Brett Kavanaugh. Harper’s is awarding censorious NPR CEO Katherine Maher with a first amendment award - the left is pure satire: https://yuribezmenov.substack.com/p/npr-ceo-katherine-maher-harpers-award

The difference here is that racist Letitia James has the white frat boys in her cross-hairs. She already showed with Trump she has unlimited judicial power in New York state. The state judges will do her bidding, as will Gov Hochul. She will load the jury up, 100% angry white women (AWFLs), against those boys. They are screwed, for doing something "consensual" if not very moral, as happens on many campuses around the country every year (crazy young girl wanting a lot of male attention from horny teenagers).

Richard's avatar

And it's Trump's fault even though it happened during the autopen years and everyone involved was a Democrat.

Andy's avatar

I bet James will have bigger fish to fry after the midterms. Trump hasn’t finished with her, not by a long shot.

Thank you , that is the best list of Democrat / Leftwinger hoaxes I have ever seen, and I've compiled a few myself. I saved it at the top of my references list. Here's another good one, a compilation of Democrat media hoax polls in the days before the 2024 election:

==

"Next thing to look for is their claiming Harris is making a quantum leap in the polls."

As expected, Harris took her imaginary “quantum leap” in the Democrat media polls in the last days before the election:

• Donald Trump's Support From Black Voters Plunges, New Poll Shows

• Donald's Trump's Chances Plunge in Major Election Forecast

• Donald Trump Campaign Bashes Polling as Numbers Against Them in Final Days

• New polls show Kamala Harris gaining ground in the last week, including Wisconsin, Georgia and even Iowa.

• Kamala Harris Receives Multiple Polling Boosts in 24 Hours

• Donald's Trump's Chances Plunge in Major Election Forecast

• Former President Donald Trump's chances of winning the election fell Wednesday, according to a top election forecast.

• Kamala Harris could win in a landslide…according to CNN polling

• Kamala goes ahead in Iowa. Shocking.

• A Harris campaign official said Friday that the campaign’s data shows late-deciding voters moving sharply in her direction.

• Four Swing States Shifted Toward Kamala Harris in Final Week: Nate Silver

And the lying, spinning CNN extravaganza on Sunday, November 3:

• Iowa poll a gut punch in Trump’s orbit

Sasha, based on polling a large majority don't trust the "legacy" media. Hence the splintering of audiences and perforce, an absence of shared observations.

What has happened due partly to media (and Dem/Leftist) manipulation, is creation of two sets of citizens, those that act, vote and form opinions based on their emotions and those that use data, facts and observed reality. Similar to the common sense approach that Trump and his superb team employ in governance.

Until the Dem/Leftists receive a HUGE comeuppance I don't see it changing. The more time they spend online and in bubbles of group think the worse they become, sadly.

Alan Sewell's avatar

You'd think they'd get tired of going into shock on most every election night when their fake polls are debunked by real votes and they flop around like gaffed fish complaining that the voters are stupid. The stupid people are in the media. They are so stupid they don't know how stupid they are.

NNTX's avatar

No surprise as they surround themselves only with folks "just like them".

A literal echo chamber.

Media polling definitely shows that MSNOW has lost most of its audience as have the NYT and WaPo. PBS has also destroyed most of its viewership and NPR is listenership. Podcasters, however, have picked up the slack. There is even less responsibility by podcasters who have no advertisers and rely on subscribers who might like the sensationalist , if untrue, stuff

Alan Sewell's avatar

The dependence on advertisers enhanced the inherent dishonesty of the traditional media, because advertisers were prone to pressure by Leftwingers. One Leftwinger would call an advertiser and threaten a boycott because they supported a show with a conservative viewpoint, then the advertiser would tell the network they were going to pull their ads unless the network canceled the conservative show. Conservative views disappeared from the on-air media.

Podcasters can say whatever they want to, letting the public be the judge of their credibility.

Richard's avatar

Some huge percentage of the remaining advertising is Pharma.

I think that's one of several reasons Tucker Carlson got fired from his Fox News show. He constantly criticized the industry for pilling, billing, and killing the public.

It has been fun to watch Bari Weiss, a progressive lib, albeit one who values truth, go through CBS News and gut it of the propagandists / activists. Now, her parent company, Skydance, also owns CNN. I hope she gets the same assignment to clean out CNN

I have come to say, including telling my Democrat acquaintances, that willingness to lie is a prerequisite to be a Democrat / Liberal. They don't like hearing that, but it is demonstrably true. They never back up their statements and accusations with documented facts. They take data out of context. For example, they might say that gasoline prices have only gone up under Trump. That is true for the past 8 months. It is a lie in the first 12 months. And they do not acknowledge, will not admit that inflation was worse under Biden. In fact, other than the Iran situation, inflation is mostly a function of Biden flooding the economy with printed dollars. Even the tariffs were a one-off cost bump for imported goods. But importers and foreign manufacturers absorbed much of the costs and did not pass them through to consumers. So the inflation from that event was highly muted. The high beef prices are because Biden forced reduction of the cattle herds through regulation. This was supposedly to reduce methane (cow farts). On and on it goes. Every way which Liberals F'd up the economy from 2021-24 has been conveniently forgotten and Trump is accused of whipping up all the problems in a handful of months. It is absurd. But the press lies and the Left and the gullible middle accept their narratives.

I'm old enough to remember when watching the "news" was a thing. Sure it was always biased but at least people lived in roughly the same universe. People got their information from most of the same places. I tried to explain to my kids that once upon a time the local weatherman would be one of the most well-known people in a city. Now all news is filtered through partisan lenses, and if something remotely pro-Trump occurs, a large segment of the population knows nothing about it.

There are positives because now it is relatively easy to be well informed if you want to be. But a lot of people would just prefer to stay in their bubble.

I would love a law where journalists are penalized for lying. The first demonstrable lie is a misdemeanor. Two is a felony. Three is 5 years in prison. Journalists should NOT have 1st Amendment rights to say anything they want. We already have exceptions to the 1st Amendment for slander and libel. People are NOT free to say anything they want. Journalists should be held to a higher standard. Yes, that would put a lid on story telling. But we need to end the activist narratives that are sold as the Truth

Richard's avatar

It takes work to break out of the bubble. Easier for the Right since so much of the culture is Left but still work.

You forgot the 'Trump Is In the Epstein Files Hoax'.

I'm old enough to remember when journalistic outfits would produce retractions. (Yes, on the last page, when the story had been on the first page.) Those days are gone. These days, it's Rosanne Rosanada: "Never mind".

David White's avatar

You also forgot the Insurrection Hoax.

When the Demos win complete control after 2028, that one is gonna come back with a vengeance: they will pack the Court and then use "insurrection" to take nearly all Republicans off the ballot.

I think that was another Gilda character, Emily Litella. Roseanne Roseannadanna’s line was “It’s always something!” Said with a sort of dejected cynicism!

It's hard to believe people put any credence in the so-called "legacy media". Personally, I haven't listened to a network evening "news" broadcast since 1988, almost 40 years ago now, after reading a book titled "The Killing of CBS" by Peter Boyer. He explained convincingly how what was once straight news coverage had been altered from the 1950's on by different techniques such as " background mood music" and other subliminal messages when presenting a "news story", etc. Of course 95% of the message was slanted leftward. It is really up to the individual to inform themselves of what is going on in the world by using common sense, logic and multiple sources of information.

My buddy and I discuss all the time how this all will end up. It started in the 60s, this fight between left and right. The loony left were a few radical groups back then that were fringe. Over time, that fringiness spread to the term "progressive" which was at least 1/3 of Democrats by the 1990s. Now, almost all Democrats are at least "progressive" and the new segment occupying the left 1/3 is DSA. The two sides are moving further apart, not closer together. The end game is a complete revolutionary war, worse than a Civil War. France is showing the way. That is what America will look like in the next 10 years. Every day will be like the Summer of Love and there will be hand to hand combat between right and left until one side has been hurt badly enough to give up. I, for one, will never be put under a totalitarian socialist regime. I will fight to the death for my freedom before that.

Great as always Sasha.

It's so freaking frustrating. Now you know how conservatives have felt the last 30-40 years (because that's how long the double standard has existed).

Mark Twain nailed it when he said, “If you don't read the newspaper, you're uninformed. If you read the newspaper, you're mis-informed.”

Be very, very afraid. It’s the oldest neo-con trick in the book and Hamilton used it in 1787.

Iran has a lot of problems. I’m not worried about getting nuked by Iran. Why don’t people ask why Trump’s timeline begins in 1979 and not 1953, with Operation Ajax? Is it because they don’t know what happened during Operation Ajax? And hate to say it, but we were the bad guys there. We tried to control/take their oil and killed a bunch of people.

If people are truly Christians, they would not want to steal and murder others.

Both parties are corrupt and until we can acknowledge that, nothing will ever change.

Channel 5 KTLA did preface that Trump was probably joking but then proceeded to go full on coverage hysteric. He is that kind of guy that’s why Stern loved him on his then famous radio show. And America spoon fed crap like MacDonalds has eaten it up. Remember Ron DeSanctimonius? Little Marco Rubio? He

has belittled the presidency. Will that change my vote? HELL NO!
