His script writers likely receive instructions from the producers, who in turn receive instructions from their higher ups, and so forth. If Kimmel were fired, they would just put in someone else just like him. The people you see on TV are at the end of the food chain. Ratings, good or bad, don't matter anymore because politically oriented shows can get alternative funding if advertising revenues dry up.
These people you see in front of the camera are basically well trained actors. There have been some exceptions like Ted Koppel on ABC and of course Sharyl Attkison on CBS. But I think late night comedy shows have not been the same since Johnny Carson left. He was genuinely funny and roasted everyone equally.

The right answer would have been something like: "Why is 60 Minutes asking me about the rantings of a guy too dumb to realize he can't get past dozens of police to even reach the escalator leading down to the ballroom?"
