It’s taken me to age 81 to realize how unkind about half of the U.S. population is. From putting hands on my first computer at age 18 till now, I had no idea how ghoulish such a large number of our citizens are. I’d begin with the abysmal parenting skills that abound but I can’t help but think that schooling without conscience may be the prime culprit. The arguments could get heated, but we were all civil with each other and I met up with a few of the conservatives from the group and we had a beer and laughed about everyday normal things that we all experience and go through. Social media seems to have destroyed that sort of debate, IMO. Of course, there were some people we had to ban from the group because all they could do was sling personal insults (at people they didn't even know personally) and they would rage incoherently. We would try to ignore them but ultimately had to ban them, which we always tried to avoid doing. So those people have always been around, it just seems like there are more of them now and they get more attention, thanks to social media algorithms.

In reading the difference between a sociopath and a psychopath, it appears to me that Candace Owens is a psychopath, not a sociopath. Psychopaths can appear quite normal, and they can be very high functioning. I’m responding to your first paragraph: allowing total anonymity on the internet has destroyed our society. It empowered trolls of all ages, including children, to masquerade as whatever they want with zero consequence for decades. The led to people like Owens, and pretty much every other ill were experiencing in society today.
Freedom of speech doesn’t mean giving children and basement dwellers anonymity to destroy our civil discourse. We need to reverse course, get kids off platforms where they mix with adults, and hope it’s not too late to save society.

However, when governments like ours have done what they’ve done recently in taking kids under 16 off social media, it has become a problem for every single Australian of any age to access any social media (including this space, when it didn’t need to comply 🤨). I am 70 years old and when I use my iPhone it triggers on one of my emails (the more privately encoded one) and I have to be quick as a wink when liking on through on my other email. As a consequence, I can’t like anything on my other email or I’ll have to give them what they want and that’s not on. AussieGrandma - I spent three months in the land down under in the late 80's and I never had a better time in my life. The people were nice, I mean really super nice, offering to drive you places or bring you home to meet their family, very open, it was amazing because America was in many ways that way, but not the extent I found with Aussies. And because of many of those kind people I was able to travel from Cairns all the way down to Adelaide and also to Canberra, Sydney, Brisbane - down the coast, to the interior - AMAZING! Which brings me to where your country is today - I am shocked and appalled at what your government has done with its censorship and digital online safety laws, and what happened during covid. Other than that, come on Down Under folks, as an old add once said: “Queensland, beautiful one day, perfect the next.” We are situated in Northern New South Wales just below the border to Queensland, a lovely coastal area that many flock to during their holidays. We escaped :) Sydney in 1992, no looking back and so glad we’re not there now. It’s a great city, beautiful and welcoming but the mayor is almost as bad as your New York mayor. We lament.

Honestly, when the covid hit I was shocked at the level of control the government wielded against the people and having met your people, I was pretty surprised that so many people went along with it. of course, I was appalled that people here fell for it too. I didn't get the jab, told my family to not get it but I could not persuade them. I was skeptical mostly because it was rushed out with no ten year studies or anything bordering on double blind placebo testing but not because it was a vaccine. I have since learned so much about vaccines that I will never take another one. Worse than that, I was shocked that most people just complied with masks and distancing and all that crap. But the footage I saw from Australia where a lady walked outside into her front yard to take her dog outside and the cops were there and told her if she didn't go back inside they would arrest her (or something akin to that) and I couldn't believe the heavy handed measures they (cops and govt) used against the people.

From putting hands on my first computer at age 18 till now, I had no idea how ghoulish such a large number of our citizens are. However, I can tell you this, it’s not computers—or the internet— that have made so many of us into hateful creatures. Look elsewhere for that. I’d begin with the abysmal parenting skills that abound but I can’t help but think that schooling without conscience may be the prime culprit. Until we have the guts to shake those institutions to their roots we’ll continue to loose imbeciles on our society in large numbers. I simply hope to God we have not passed the point of no return.
I agree. I’m almost 61 and I’ve seen this kind of cruelty my ENTIRE life, through grade school, high school, college, and then again in the corporate workplace. In our public schools and neighborhoods. Even in our extended family on both sides. The internet did NOT create this, it simply exposed it and gave it a camera/mic for everyone to see and hear. But it has always been there, fueled by jealousy or personal agendas.
Let me tell you, parochial schools have their share of cruel kids too. And don't get me started on nuns.

Back in the early 2000's, when I was a solid liberal, I used to participate in political discussion groups. The arguments could get heated, but we were all civil with each other and I met up with a few of the conservatives from the group and we had a beer and laughed about everyday normal things that we all experience and go through. Social media seems to have destroyed that sort of debate, IMO. Of course, there were some people we had to ban from the group because all they could do was sling personal insults (at people they didn't even know personally) and they would rage incoherently. We would try to ignore them but ultimately had to ban them, which we always tried to avoid doing. So those people have always been around, it just seems like there are more of them now and they get more attention, thanks to social media algorithms.

In reading the difference between a sociopath and a psychopath, it appears to me that Candace Owens is a psychopath, not a sociopath. Psychopaths can appear quite normal, and they can be very high functioning. Candace's lack of empathy and remorse, combined with her cold, calculated and methodical approach to destroy Erika Kirk, for no apparent reason. Couple that with her charismatic charm and manipulative speech tells me that she's a psychopath, not a sociopath.
I spotted Candace well over a year ago, one day listening to her. Everything revolves back to, and around her. If you listen objectively and closely and follow her reasoning. She's a world-class manipulator. My discernment told me to stay far away from her - that there is something seriously wrong with being connected to her in any way. The podcasters on the Right who defend her will get burned by it one day, and they will regret it. It may not happen anytime soon, because people can be easily fooled and they can be spiritually blinded by audience capture, money and attention, but it will happen.
The crucifix that Candace prominently displays in the background as she manipulates hearts and minds; while spewing lies, hearsay and slander, is in my understanding, blasphemy. She clearly has no fear of God, even to the point of mocking, and that tells me all I need to know.
I’m responding to your first paragraph: allowing total anonymity on the internet has destroyed our society. It empowered trolls of all ages, including children, to masquerade as whatever they want with zero consequence for decades. The led to people like Owens, and pretty much every other ill were experiencing in society today.
Freedom of speech doesn’t mean giving children and basement dwellers anonymity to destroy our civil discourse. We need to reverse course, get kids off platforms where they mix with adults, and hope it’s not too late to save society.
I agree with getting kids off the social media spiral. However, when governments like ours have done what they’ve done recently in taking kids under 16 off social media, it has become a problem for every single Australian of any age to access any social media (including this space, when it didn’t need to comply 🤨). We have to hand over every bit of information,
facial recognition etc before being allowed to continue. I am 70 years old and when I use my iPhone it triggers on one of my emails (the more privately encoded one) and I have to be quick as a wink when liking on through on my other email. You see, we cry out for more protections, the ground has been seeded there, too and then “they” happily oblige us, with more personal restrictions and more personal data handed over. As a consequence, I can’t like anything on my other email or I’ll have to give them what they want and that’s not on. I was a righteous protestor from the 60’s-70’s against the Vietnam war, my husband the 1st successful conscientious objector in Australia while others rotted in prison. We’ve been the full gamut of the political spectrum like Sasha, even worked for the corrupt UN for a time, marched in their peace rallies, and now with all that history we work for God. Funny that. But please, be careful for what you cry out for, you just might get it.

AussieGrandma - I spent three months in the land down under in the late 80's and I never had a better time in my life. The people were nice, I mean really super nice, offering to drive you places or bring you home to meet their family, very open, it was amazing because America was in many ways that way, but not the extent I found with Aussies. And because of many of those kind people I was able to travel from Cairns all the way down to Adelaide and also to Canberra, Sydney, Brisbane - down the coast, to the interior - AMAZING! Which brings me to where your country is today - I am shocked and appalled at what your government has done with its censorship and digital online safety laws, and what happened during covid. A lot has changed since then, but we are a basically happy lot of people, many different cultures here, too, some are very much appreciated and others held as somewhat “suss” as we say here. No prizes for who that might be, especially since December 14th at Bondi Beach. Other than that, come on Down Under folks, as an old add once said: “Queensland, beautiful one day, perfect the next.” We are situated in Northern New South Wales just below the border to Queensland, a lovely coastal area that many flock to during their holidays. We escaped :) Sydney in 1992, no looking back and so glad we’re not there now. It’s a great city, beautiful and welcoming but the mayor is almost as bad as your New York mayor. We lament.

Honestly, when the covid hit I was shocked at the level of control the government wielded against the people and having met your people, I was pretty surprised that so many people went along with it. of course, I was appalled that people here fell for it too. I didn't get the jab, told my family to not get it but I could not persuade them. I was skeptical mostly because it was rushed out with no ten year studies or anything bordering on double blind placebo testing but not because it was a vaccine. I have since learned so much about vaccines that I will never take another one. Worse than that, I was shocked that most people just complied with masks and distancing and all that crap. But the footage I saw from Australia where a lady walked outside into her front yard to take her dog outside and the cops were there and told her if she didn't go back inside they would arrest her (or something akin to that) and I couldn't believe the heavy handed measures they (cops and govt) used against the people.

Where I live is an alternative type place, lotsa young families, retirees, more people with better instincts and new ones arriving yearly. It’s kinda like Australia used to be, living here is a piece of Paradise, but the “blue meanies” still circulate, they were here on our streets, too and harassed the local health food shop owner, a mother of three every other day for not wearing her mask. She had made a statutory statement signed by a Justice of the Peace (JP) which exempted her, but they pushed anyway. She refused and they finally gave up. They harassed kids on their bikes, people walking their dogs (that one you saw was in Victoria again) but like good lottle prisoners we were allowed one hour a day in the “yard” 😡. No, we shall never forget and now, too many are switched on and will never be switched off again. Funny thing, no one wants to talk about it all or revisit it which concerns me for any future climate lockdowns that MUST be enacted. You guys are so blessed to have Trump, despite all of his foot in mouth episodes (and find him hilarious fun) he’s done one thing that must be commendable, fighting off the dogs of the Demoncrats. Yes Aussies will always treat you well and welcome most to their shores. I’m so glad to hear of your travels from the top to the bottom of the east coast and beyond. It’s a rugged and beautiful place and has shaped generations of white fellas, let alone millennia of Aboriginal people. The government so very much wants to eliminate that so they can know everything we do, everywhere we go, everyone we associate with, so they can completely control us. I’m sensitive to the government angle but (1) they already know everything we’re doing online anyway, and (2) there are other ways to handle this situation. Put the onus on Reddit and Discord to validate users are over 18 and citizens and things get better overnight. Force those people to man up and put a face to what they’re saying online and the national temperature comes down within a week.

As a cradle Catholic, I am ashamed of Candace, the recent convert. We have enough bad Catholics ( Pelosi, Biden, Cuomo) we don’t need recently catechized ones as well.
