I talked to my 5 year old son today about Dolly Parton. We live near where she grew up and her presence has always been a part of his life. He got her books as has all my other children for literally decades. The Childrens Hospital is now named after Dolly (happened this year). I asked him why everyone loves Dolly. He said because she was a singer. I told him that everyone knew her because she was a very well known singer, but everyone loved her because she was always kind.
I went through the entire day after learning about Dolly's passing, knowing that at anyone time, there were probably over 100 million people humming and singing, "I Will Always Love You." I know that I did.
She was authentic!!!! The kindness and goodness came out of her naturally. People often recognize her kindness and what she contributed - that’s all performative viewing due to media and social media - yet they FEEL her goodness because of her authenticity!!! That’s what people have long forgotten authentic connection to self and others. 🙏🏼 that’s what moves people.
I got to see her do a performance in Dollywood a few years back. She was of course wonderful, but I was struck at how good a musician she was. She played the violin, guitar, banjo, and mandolin. Probably a few other instruments that I don't recall.
Dolly’s whole life and career was to fulfilling her calling as a Christ-follower. She truly was a lifelong missionary (probably, culturally, the most well known globally and celebrated). She used her God given talents to glorify Him and bless her community and those needing laughter, joy and escape. The media, ill-equipped to cover personal faith, has overlooked this centrality to Dolly’s life in each and every obituary and testimonial. Dolly had a peace, confidence and courage, through her faith, that many admire and desire. I love the fact that liberal atheists and agnostics claim her as their own, as that testifies to the power of God working through His vessel Dolly to give hope and love so that all might want to know Him. If you can’t grasp Dolly’s personal, lifelong faith, you can’t grasp her legacy, impact and importance.
I could be wrong, but I have not heard anyone from the "right" claim the left can't mourn Dolly Parton so my comment is aimed toward the left. This is all I have to say. Dolly grew up dirt poor from east Tennessee Appalachia. She achieved the American Dream through hard work and talent.
She NEVER forgot where she came from and who she was. She helped people from that area many times.
