Joseph McCarthy was not wrong about Communist infiltration of government. But he overplayed his hand and came across as a bully, so it was easy for the press (as the media were known) to smear him while siding, then as now, with far-left figures in government and other institutions.
There is the book Blacklisted By History by M. Stanton Evans, who says based on Venona and open KGB archives that McCarthy was generally right after all.
It wouldn't take a far right winger to acknowledge the Communist infiltration of the State Department. In 1952, the GOP won in a landslide with such slogans as "Communism, Corruption and Korea."

Hey John, LBJ was considered the hero of black folks for encouraging & then signing the Equal Rights Act during his tenure, but he made a statement as to why to some friends in his party. Paperboys all over the city were told to come back for new editions.
I don't know whether or not Joe McCarthy "overplayed his hand" but I do know his reputation and character were significantly slimed in a 30 minute broadcast in March of 1954 by Edward R Murrow on CBS, yet another commie detracting from his own his evil. Murrow had built up a household name in the US by broadcasting CBS news during WWII, and he used that reputation to harm McCarthy.

Ironic coincidence is that RFK (showing a "right wing" side) worked briefly for Joe McCarthy, before taking over the anti-war movement in 1968. He probably had the best character of the Kennedy politicians.
It would be very interesting to use the Venona decrypts and KGB archives to test the assertion that Joe McCarthy found no communists in his "witch hunt." This was attempted in M. Stanton Evans' book, Blacklisted By History.
The Left has controlled the narrative for more years than we would care to admit. McCarthy was his own worst enemy in part, but he was accurate. And the Left mastered their skills in demonizing individuals who were a threat to their agenda. How many movies did we have to endure about "blacklisting" and HUAC and the heroic journalists.... good grief. I wanted to puke and I was only a teenager in the 60's and 70's.
I hate that! When my first book came out, my wife found a typo in the first line that I had somehow missed, despite months of editing. Fortunately, I self-published and was able to correct the error quickly but, any time I see an original edition, I cringe.
