In reality, we seldom vote in favor of anyone. We look at the list of candidates and decide first who not to vote for and finally decide on the least objectionable candidate. None is ever perfect. Too often it means holding your nose and figuratively pulling the lever. If I wear a mask to the polls this year, it won’t be a fear of Covid or germs, it will be to lessen the stench because I’ll be voting for some pretty smelly candidates, but—as you said, Sasha—they’re not mutilating our children, not putting boys in girls sports, and, generally, not trying to destroy the country.

I’ll give Mr. French a bit of benefit of the doubt on this, as there’s evidence that he was addressing the reality that Texas students (regardless of race) are being pushed out of/blocked from University of TEXAS programs in favor of foreign nationals in prestigious programs. UT isn’t the only school, and Texas isn’t the only state with this concern.
For many years our universities have been admitting foreigners versus our own high school grads. Our own son was put on the waiting list for U of I. The fact that he was a straight A student and we were both legacies didn’t matter. He eventually graduated Summa CumLaude from another college. Why are these institutions favoring foreigners? I’m sure if we follow the money, we will find out.
Bo French may have a point for some schools but this may not be the right school. I am a graduate of UT Austin and attended in the late 90’s and lived in Austin for 20 years. UT has always had a large south Asian student population this isn’t new. Everyone I knew was first generation American. The photo that has everyone in such an uproar looks to me like 2nd or 3rd generation Americans assimilating into our culture and having a great time at a football game. This is exactly how we want when immigrants to come to this country, assimilate and contribute to society.
