Taking over the whole country (except, hopefully, the part on the other side of the Carpathians) would solve the problem of making sure that the rump of Ukraine never joins NATO. It would also give Russia much secure borders, making them much less likely to get all paranoid and aggressive. I suspect there is a secret deal to return Belorussia to Mother Russia when Lukashenko is gone. (Belorussian is even more similar to Great Russian.)
And what is lost? The Ukrainians have to adjust their dialect in the direction of Great Russian. Was avoiding that "fate" worse than losing half a million men? I venture to doubt it.
