The Trump Hunters Celebrate Not with a Bang, but a Whimper

The announcement that Trump had become the first President of the United States to be indicted has Twitter users exploding with unhinged ecstasy. This is their Superbowl. What do you give people who have everything? You give them a win, pitiful and flaccid though it is.

They’re apparently charging Trump with 34 counts of things that have nothing whatsoever to do with their main complaints against him: threat to Democracy, racist, extremist, etc. This will be limp and procedural and it will embarrass all involved. Just don’t expect Twitter or the media to ever admit it.

The announcement felt the end of something sacred and the beginning of something sinister. It isn’t just that it sets such a dangerous precedent, and it isn’t that the prosecutor vowed to “get Trump,” it isn’t even the last seven years - the pee tape, Russiagate, two impeachments. It’s that it’s all so small. It’s so pitiful. There is nothing mighty or powerful about any of it. It’s a trickle. A whimper.

But what probably dooms us as a country is the happiness of the so-called resistance. Nothing they did for seven years could bring him down but it doesn’t matter. They have now exposed themselves as Puritans who wanted to rid their village of a person they felt threatened by and they were willing to use any excuse to finish the job. If this was a real crime and a real charge, they would be somber and serious, a sad day for our country.

But that isn’t what it is, and everyone knows it.

Petty, personal, punitive, delusional, ruled by the fanatics on Twitter and in the media - the longer they stay in power, the weaker and more fractured this country will become. Sooner or later, the public is going to become weary of this constant need to keep the country off-balance to satisfy people like Krazy Keith.

What remains shocking is how badly they’re doing once they took back power. Supposedly they were the “adults in the room,” the steady hand. All we have is a president who has no idea where he is half the time and an administration overrun by fanaticism. They have failed the American people time and time again yet all they still have to offer them is TRUMP hunting.

Their madness and delusion are meant to stand in for things Trump actually did. It’s all about racism and fascism and a threat to Democracy, but then they try to nail him on some petty and pointless charge. Why? What’s the end game? Taking him out of the election cycle or keeping him in it?

He’s not Al Capone or some elusive mob boss who has been committing crime after crime after crime and is finally being convicted of tax evasion. This feels personal and thus, not worthy of breaking with history to indict a US president for the first time. This is a warning to all of us: don’t you dare try to be one of us. Don’t you dare try to participate? Don’t even think about it. If they can do this to Trump, they can do it to you.

But don’t listen to them. They’re wrong. They’re corrupt. I always thought Trump was the one creating chaos. I thought he was the threat. But now I know they were. Why did they do it? Because they believe this is their country, not ours.

If I were them I’d be much more worried about what’s coming next rather than clinging to the petty resentments of the past.

The glee being celebrated on Twitter right now says it all. It tells you exactly who they are. If this were indeed a serious charge, most Americans would see it as a tragedy. But to them, because they’ve been systematically dehumanizing Trump and his supporters these long seven years, it’s lathered up a frenzy of giddy delight and existential relief, like the people of Salem gathering in the town square cheering on watching their friends and neighbors hang.

They have everything. They own everything - all of the money, all of the culture, and most of the political power. But as long as Trump exists — as long as he survives, like every threat to every Shining City on the Hill, they can’t be all the way happy.

They want what they want and they want it NOW!

There’s just one problem. They’re dancing on the edge of a volcano. Their empire is still collapsing. There is nothing they can do to fix themselves. They’re completely unhinged and insane.

They can’t fix their ineffectual governance, weak leadership, or toxic and dangerous policies. They can’t make themselves even remotely tolerable, let alone likable.

It’s the scam of the century. They will do just what they did through the Summer of 2020 - nonstop chaos and trauma to make themselves look better. They will make all of us pay just to punish an outsider who dared challenge their authority.

Some of them, the smart ones, must know this is wrong because buckling to the tyranny of the mob is always wrong. But it’s been building since “cancel culture” began. It’s only gotten bigger and harder to control. Now it has infected our government and our justice system.

History tells us we’re due for a pendulum swing. It’s only a question of how bad things will get before it does.

I’ve only voted for one Republican in my life: Larry Elder to unseat Gavin Newsom. I live in California, so it doesn’t matter, but just to say, because of this indictment, I’d even vote for Trump if it came to that. Enough is enough.

In the meantime, this is a great opportunity just to walk away from the game. Do not take the bait of becoming violent. They want violence. They want to show the American public that everything they’ve done up to now was justified. There is a better way.

Violence is for the helpless and the hopeless. Anyone whispering in your ear to become violent does not have your best interests at heart.

Vote with your feet. Action, action, action. Get involved. Don’t be intimidated. Knock on doors. Raise money. Form community groups to get the vote out. The great thing about this country is that if enough people show up and register their disgust with this regime, the Democrats will get the message loud and clear.

But more than any of that, remember how fleeting it all is. And how fast life speeds by. It’s over in an instant. We can surely do better than ever paying attention to a single word Keith Olbermann and Joe Scarborough says.

Will you shoulder the risk of pursuing real human connection, as hard and intimidating and discouraging as that can be? Or will you hide in your room forever, comforted by fast food and porn and opiates and therapy and TikTok, risking nothing? It’s up to you. I don’t pretend that it’s easy to choose the former. I don’t pretend that I always choose it or will always choose it, or that I’ve chosen it well, or that choosing it hasn’t cost me a great deal, at times. I know it’s not easy. A lot of people reach out to another and have their hand slapped down. And that’s scary. But to keep trying is to declare to the universe that you will have the courage to be human, when everyone and everything tempts you to be otherwise. Remember: you are you. We live here. This is now.

Right after the news about Trump, I heard thunder outside my window, and it began to rain. But a few minutes later, the clouds were gone, and the sun came out to light up the mountains outside my window. Don’t let the bastards get you down and rob you of one more minute of life.
