Great post. As a longtime insurance agent, it feels to me that the virtue-signaling is social insurance for so many of our athletes and entertainers. Their managers and agents perform due diligence by telling them what to think and support, because it is essential for their public image and any possible careers opportunities beyond sports or entertainment. At halftime, I flipped over to ESPN for the dog show. The Afghan won the hound group and the Beagle, a close 2nd. The Treeing Walker Coonhound (my favorite pooch breed) came in 3rd. I wasn’t going to be a puppet of either camp on this.
I did something similar. I went on YouTube and tuned in the Big Bear bald eagle camera live video and watched the bald eagles for a while. Very soothing, and no Spanish/English to wrestle with. Their managers and agents perform due diligence by telling them what to think and support, because it is essential for their public image and any possible careers opportunities beyond sports or entertainment. Playing any other "anthem" instead of the shared national anthem is divisive. It's telling the country that only one subgroup counts. In the antebellum South, in the post Reconstruction South (Jim Crow, KKK 1.0, KKK 2.0, etc.) a bunch of un-Reconstructed Southerners tried to take away black's rights and separate them from their national heritage, including their anthem. But that anthem belongs to them, as much or more than to any blue blood from 7 generations of plantation owners or Harvard Men.
If you really think that a different song should be selected as the National Anthem, convince your Congressmen to change to it. The NFL leadership is out of sync with the core fans. There was nothing unifying in the halftime show. It was certainly choreographed and lavish and some would find it entertaining. But, we just wanted watch a game of football, not politics.

Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn.
The NFL did what it wanted, and so will we. It was not a good show - with so many different wonderful kinds of Latin music and dancing, THAT was what was presented? Mumbling arhythmic vulgarity? I speak, read and write Spanish fluently - the little I could understand was disgusting - not a family show, not a show for anyone who doesn't want to watch or listen to descriptions of sex acts. That's it. It was the opposite of any kind of culture; to those people unfamiliar with Latin culture, what a repulsive and inaccurate introduction. He speaks English - yet he chose not to - it was incredibly divisive and borderline insulting. I won't be watching pro football games going forward...which is pretty meaningless, since I only ever watch at Super Bowl parties...but the ill will this has generated will have other, expanding effects outside the NFL world.
