I appreciate “this little Substack“ and your thoughtful and often entertaining content. I am a paid subscriber and I encourage your readers to subscribe or leave a tip. You need to make a living and it’s hard to do so if you’re not being paid for your countless hours of research and writing and engaging.

In the past, I've used Buy Me A Coffee and how it's done on YouTube, but I don't know how to do tipping on Substack.

Trish Woods, to me, is totally worth a subscription. Most appealing is she's "generous" by allowing everyone to participate. After what she's been through with the Guild or whoever, she's still "inviting".

It may be of interest to you that the beeches have leafed out normally.

I remember when Sasha said that she had "hundreds" of subscribers. I thought that was disappointingly paltry. I am glad that things are now so much better. (Play That Funky Music. Probably most readers are either too old or too young to know that song.)

It may be of interest to you to know that we have something in common beyond beeches: I was once shot at. The guy had a rifle, and was about 25 yards away. As for why he missed, he was out hunting at night. (I am pretty sure that is not legal ...) It appears that, getting only a very limited view of the back of my white "micro-van" (Mazda-5), which I was trying to sleep in, he thought he was looking at a deer. (Not very bright: since when do deer let people walk up on them in a forest with the leaf-litter?) I'm just glad he missed into the air of the forest to his left rather than straight through my back window. The guy stood there for several minutes, as if "My God, did I just fire at a car?" ("Yes, you did.") Since his light was, as far as I could tell, absolutely still, at first I thought maybe I was looking at light hung from a post outside of a house, which had been turned on after I bedded down. But then it started moving (off to his right). Not too long after that, heard two more gunshots, which must have been from him. And then, near dawn, two more.

It seems non-coincidental that I was in was southern E Texas: notorious for hunters going out after deer or pigs, and shooting at game-wardens if they have a mind to: "A man has to feed his family!" I mean deer or pigs, not game-wardens ...

Yikes. The guy who shot at me intended to hit me. I’m glad they missed both of us.

Yes, that is a significant difference.

And here is a significant failure: not making the significant connection between my "micro-van" and my "micro-legs".

Oh, that song. The bass seems rather low in the mix. This was (in my view) a problem with bass in the 70s. But some of the best bands did not do that: Paul McCartney (why would he want bass high in the mix?), Elton John, and Queen. Queen's John Deacon is probably my second favorite bassist. Sting's bass is often very good, but very often his songs would just not bear it.

Just yesterday, while I was out unloading my car, some guy drove by blaring out "The Midnight Rambler". A message from the universe/God?

I will get back to you on that. But for the moment, I have, due to my trip, fallen behind on my Daily Readings. These are what enable me to read books like Language and Language and History in Early Britain (2 pages per day) and New Comparative Grammar of Greek and Latin (5 pages per day). More than that, and I will start skimming: there are limits to how much historical linguistics even a historical linguist can stand ...

A brief tale from my trip .. On Saturday, I thought it was horrible that I had to cross a (flood-driven) stream that was up to my knees. Ditto for Sunday, just with water up to my mid-thigh, and then for Monday, with water up to my crotch. (Yes, it was a challenge to remain standing.) Truth in Advertising: though I have the torso of a man who is 6' 1", I have the legs of a man who is 5' 5". And so it is that I demand, of course, that all pictures of must be sitting down. Too bad that, if any woman walks in and sees me on a couch, I can't get up!

On a truly befuddling note, on the way out I saw a lot of an ugly flower known as Hungarian Bastard Cabbage, making me wonder which particular Hungarian Bastard that plant is named after. Maybe the one in My Fair Lady.
