Well, some of your readers just can’t help themselves, “needing” to be negative/take pot shots, even in your own breathing out of personal opinion, joy for others, daring to celebrate love as you’ve candidly shared here.

So, while I’ve not been a Swift fan, nor do I particularly care, I have plenty of younger (& older) family members who are. Why would my feelings/ideas be more valid than theirs?

I say, “Here’s to Love!” May you and this young couple and all of us have a smashing coming year! Why the heck not??!

All very likely. My comments weren’t re the couple, nor judging their affection or authenticity, but re Sasha’s (& each person’s) “right” to enjoy whatever she’d like out of this or any situation. Whatever inspires wishes, hopes for more happiness/love in our world is really a personal perspective.

Fine, the right to enjoy is personal and the right to not care and express that feeling has equal validity.

Suzanne-Marie English's avatar

Exactly. That’s what I said, also, in both comments. And I, personally, have never cared about “stars” lives other than to include them in wishing them well as human beings. I’m very familiar with PR, as I spent decades in “the industry”. I know what it is, what it isn’t.

So what? Maybe it is real or perhaps it is fake. Rich people fall in love, too. And they can afford big weddings. Again, so what? It sounds like sour grapes when you are unable to enjoy someone else's happiness.

BeadleBlog's avatar

Not sure how they are in control of minds. They have fans and both seem to be very likeable people. As celebrities it would be no surprise if they do a big wedding and their fans would love it. Also, what is "authentic love?" Are you the decider of what is "authentic?"

smart and charming as hell.

It is refreshing that the new cycle gave her something to celebrate. I don’t care about Taylor Swift either, but some are using this opportunity to encourage people to actually get married and have kids. Maybe she can make marriage cool. Feminism has demonized marriage and family for too long.

I liked her in her early days. My daughters and I could all relate to her early songs. We all routed for her.

Somewhere along the way she sold her her soul to the devil for fame and fortune, as many do in the industry. We stopped listening, stopped paying attention. Then she got political and very left leaning around that same time. Another sign of which side of good and evil she chose.

Maybe this is a publicity stunt, maybe it’s real, maybe it will happen, maybe not, maybe it lasts and maybe it doesn’t. I don’t believe there will be children either way but I really don’t care about any of it.

All I care about is her awful influence on youth who have enough evil influences in this world, and getting worse by the day. I rather see no one listening to anything she says or sings than see young girls corrupted. Sorry but that’s the reality.

I don’t follow Swift closely enough to know how she has changed over the past decade. So, curiously, how has she changed? Do you think she would go after Kelce’s money? Just as an outsider casually watching her when she makes headlines, it doesn’t seem to fit her profile.

They will last. I'm a little bit of an expert on what true love looks like and they have that. What we should all be hoping is that she has children, preferably a girl first. It may change her perspective as it does all moms and dads, one way or the other. It's very difficult for one to know what they stand for until that something is going to affect the person they love most in the world. Ignore the jerks. They don't have to like something, but they can also remain silent sometimes. Sheesh.

Expand full comment

Valid point. Having a daughter who played sports really made that issue relatable. I also had a student who gave her whole life dedicated to being the best in her sport, and then just as she was about to have opportunities (scholarships, etc), she lost her national ranking to boys claiming "female." She had come from nothing, and it really mattered to her--and she committed suicide. That haunts me.

Let’s be honest for a moment here. American parents do very little to prepare their children for marriage and family life.

https://www.pewresearch.org/social-trends/2023/01/24/parenting-in-america-today/ - look at the second table in the report.

It’s easy to critique women in their 30s who are marrying for the first time. Taylor and Travis are the same age (both 35) and in an ideal society would have married by age 25. Sadly, both men and women in America delay marriage and focus on their careers.

I applaud Travis and Taylor for choosing marriage.

Expand full comment
AMF's avatar

Many parents (like me) waited, not by choice, and now realize that no career can compare to the joy of parenthood! I wish more people would talk about that. But maybe not everyone feels the same way as my husband and I? Parenting is also challenging, and in a very self-centered society, it's hard to sell the idea of sacrifice for the greater good anymore.

They don't really have a choice. It's a side effect of celebrity. They don't get to have privacy, so they have learned to let people "manage" their public persona. I actually feel sad for them in that way. Being rich does not necessarily make one happy or fulfilled; many of them are miserable due to the need for normalcy.
