The 2008 angle is a bad analysis. The change was the onset of social media, and the role of the internet in damaging traditional media. Social media had several effects:
1) drove first the left more left and then the right more right by creating self-reinforcing online echo chambers, especially initially among left leaning members of our media
2) caused those left leaning media folks to go so far left that they had growing gaps with mainstream America's thinking
3) echo chamber amplified by algorithms made them say false things outright, embellish, and take further out positions
4) social media, though, enabled candidates, and really all citizens, to speak directly to the public, and successfully falsify those media narratives
5) further-right folks could now also create their own embellished narratives and had more ability to get heard by their own side through greater connectivity and by algorithm driven content feeds

A republic is an indirect democracy. There has not been a true direct democracy since ancient Athens, but carry on.

I could argue that every instance of Marxism adopted on the planet was just another example of fascism. Fascists do not have to be Marxists, but Marxists have to be fascists. It is really simple. No leader has ever forced unnatural Marxism down the throats of his countrymen without resorting to fascist (nationalist totalitarian with centralized government military controls) techniques. Mussolini was a Marxist. Hitler was as well, though he denied it (ego too big to acknowledge the teaching of his Jewish German predecessor). Mao was both a Marxist and a fascist as was Lenin, Stalin, Pol Pot, Castro and Maduro. Xi is a quasi-Marxist but all in on fascism as is Putin (modern Marxists have acknowledged the limitations of sharing wealth equally, and want to be elites themselves).

I used to enjoy Ken Burns work until I realized what a guilty racist he was. He never grew up in and with any black kids. Never played ball with them and wondered why they had to go to school 23 miles from where we lived. It was fun and good when they started coming to our school. We could all play ball on our schools teams.
You are so right. I grew up in Louisiana. A lot of kids were raised by black “maids”. We hugged them, went to their houses and churches. I rarely heard the N word. Ken burns revulsion is something I’ve never seen or felt. When I was growing up interracial marriage was still taboo but now it is common and accepted in most classes. I can’t think of any of my friends who don’t have some interracial marriage in their families. Obama really divided the races. My older black friends warn me that some of the black youth are “messed up”. I have a friend in her 40’s who has a masters degree, great job and family but still feels oppressed. I tried to understand but now I’m just worn out with it. Another decisive thing Obama did was light up the White House when the right to gay marriage was passed. I saw a description of the UK as like North Korea but with Islamic rape gangs. Germany wants another go at Russia, Poland wants to take on both of them, France is just paralyzed. I think people greatly underestimate how damaging 2008 Obama was. Everyone allowed themselves to be swept away with an Obama Derangement Syndrome, conveniently forgetting or overlooking that he was a snake from South Chicago who had spent years fully involved with some of the most radical “revolutionary” race charlatans in the world, like Louis Farrakhan.
After so many of his soaring speeches that had everyone drunk with hopefulness—to the jaw dropping extent that they gave him a Nobel Peace Prize, for election speeches!!!!!—I remember everyone honestly believed he was going to lead a new era of Yes We Can bipartisanship to improve life and fix so many problems. Immediately after inauguration, the GOP showed up for the bipartisan address-the-problems-of-all-Americans kickoff…and the soaring speech-giver had been replaced by the real Obama. Cold dismissive South Chicago political thug, “elections have consequences” and “I won.”
Also everyone let themselves believe that Obama was uniquely positioned to heal any lingering racial tensions. And that electing a black president was a monumental step forward and confirmation of American democracy’s ability to renew and reinvent. And then came the “Beer Summit” incident. Where a pompous black Harvard professor provoked a tense situation with a local police officer. And then cried racism and injustice…and Obama reflexively jumped in to criticize the white police officer as racist, to “teach America” about ubiquitous systemic racism against black people, to criticize police. And then the real facts of that incident came out. So Obama sheepishly called for the beer summit, where the professor and police officer came together at the White House over a drink to “understand each other.” But it was an unsettling glimpse behind Obama‘s mask, that he was not a guru of racial healing in the slightest, rather every bone in his body was pickled with the divisive grievance mongering of South Chicago radicals.
And so America let itself be entirely duped by his election speeches. And that hopefulness and trust was shattered when he turned out to be the exact opposite. He is the exact opposite of the man in the speeches, which makes him one of the biggest boldest liars in the history of the world. He is exactly who we should have known him to be, a radical South Chicago thug and race baiter, who unleashed and accelerated untold evil divisiveness that has grown into an impossible cancer now 17 years later.
