It’s been hard to lose Charlie, Scott Adams, VDH’s health issues, and now America This week. I pray I can still hear Matt and Walter’s musings on the world. I began to depend on it. Walter’s throw-back love of humanity and what makes America exceptional. His love of the common man warms my spirit weekly. Don’t leave us Sasha!!

NNTX's avatar

VDH was back this week, thank goodness.

Yes losing Charlie, Scott and now ATW seems like low blows in the ongoing effort to TAKE THE CULTURE BACK from creeps and corruptocrats.

What MADE America exceptional. The USA doesn't exist anymore, we know from the Twitter Files Hearings. We're in a fascist oligarchy now. Rule of law, as outlined by The Constitution, went away with the 1st Amendment.

You said what I'm thinking! UHG....

I’m sad and will really miss ATW. Sasha, please know that you are bringing so many of us a similar sense of sanity and insight, please keep it coming.

I had no idea that AVID mutual listeners to ATW share a common interest in other ‘casters with unique “Takes”. Add Mike Shellenberger and Matt’s Twitter Files which broke the “witches spell” of hypnotic censorship. These two truth warriors (aka so called journalists) testifying

I had no idea that the mutual listeners to ATW shared my common interest in these ‘casters with unique “Takes”. Add Mike Shellenberger and Matt’s Twitter Files exposure which broke the “witches spell” of censorship. These 2 heroic “so called” journalists testimony before Congress fueled the collapse of the totalitarian forces! As a former Minnesotan like Walter I experienced the dark woke Leftist underbelly that rules beneath the camouflage of “MN Nice” to this day.

Unforgettable… Thank you all for your courage. I look forward to your evolutions…onward.

Oh no!!!! I haven't had time to listen this week. Shoot. Noooooooooooooo. You gave me bad news. 😔 Why? I loved this dynamic. I love Walter.

CMC's avatar

You speak for many of us. The losses are adding up alarmingly fast.

Don't forget you can also support Walter Kirn by subscribing to his print newspaper, County Highway. It comes out 6 times a year and is a great read, if a little eclectic and full of old Americana content that is mostly lost on me, as a Brit. But there's a lot of wry humor and very good writing. Check it out at https://www.countyhighway.com/. They actually broke the Minnesota fraud story before it went viral on the internet.

Dave Slate's avatar

I'm also a subscriber to County Highway. I turn to it when I'm in the mood for something long, leisurely, detailed, meandering, and rustic. As you mentioned, the in depth Minnesota fraud article was very good.

Beautifully expressed, Sasha, as always. I've been feeling so bereft since learning this sad news on Monday. I loved the interplay between the two of them which was so authentic and warm. News I can get anywhere. That interplay, the repartee, the insights, that was unique and has no replacement anywhere. Not to mention that the book club was fabulous. Brave New World was the first time I read a book (in the way back when times, in middle school) that made me realize there was a lot going on behind the story on the surface that I didn't fully understand but wanted to. And it's sad not to hear the two of them discuss it. I'm still hoping something will change and they'll find a way to meet in the middle w/regard to ATW.

Gary Edwards's avatar

The look of it seems final, and I like many can't understand why. A future for ATW doesn't seem to have much hope, but I pray I'm wrong

Brian Nelson's avatar

You summed up my thoughts and feelings perfectly.

Mark Blair's avatar

I’m behind in my reading and still on A Scanner Darkly, with the episodes paused. Did they get to discussing any of Brave New World?

They’d sounded excited about discussing that one too :-(

ColdWarBrat's avatar

They were just getting started on it.

Mark Blair's avatar

That's unfortunate that they weren't able to finish :-(

Would be nice, once things cool off, if they could get together for an informal recording to finish talking about it, but I suppose that is unlikely :-(

Ann Robinson's avatar

Walter did a wonderful introduction to Train Dreams, but they never got around to talking about this wonderful book - if they did, I missed it.

I just renewed my annual subscription. Hate to say it, but it feels like a bait and switch anyway.

Will Whitman's avatar

The gaping hole left by Walter can't be filled.

McG's avatar

It was a brilliant dynamic those two had. Matt the cautious journalist who once he had his ducks in a row could spit fire, and Walter who laid his thoughts bare in a spontaneous way but always artful and incisive. There WAS tension but there were also laughs and I think most of us can relate to one or the other or both.

CMC's avatar

Yes, so true! That is what I looked forward to, every episode, a relief and psychological life line.

America This Week was one of my favorite shows. With the loss of it and Coffee with Scott Adams, I am feeling quite sad and scared even as I don’t want to get pulled into either camp of echo chambers in our media. I still have No Agenda, which is great but in more of an entertainment way. The loss of America This Week is huge for me.

Kaysathome's avatar

Same. My two favorite podcasts (thought leaders really) gone within a month of each other. Feeling very “ at sea” without them.

Brian DeLeon's avatar

Scott Adams died a month ago. His unique voice and spirit is gone. Now Walter Kirn is no longer on the air. It seems all our great thinkers and spokesmen are disappearing. I listened to ATW mostly for Walter, no offense to Matt. I will miss the short stories and the novel critiques.

Will Whitman's avatar

You put your finger on it. Matt is an honest-to-goodness reporter who can't be bought - a rarity. Walter is a sort of literary genius. One who also has informed opinions; whereas Matt prefers the neutrality of where the lead goes. Walter gave ballast where there was none. I was one of the earliest yearly subscribers to his Substack. As to if that continues it remains to be earned.

Mark Blair's avatar

What a brilliant combination they were!

North Country's avatar

I regret recently buying a year’s subscription as this isn’t the product I thought I was buying. I won’t have that trust with Matt next year! (I doubt I’ll receive my requested refund.)

Will Whitman's avatar

You should get that refund. If you don’t, say so.

Victor Davis Hanson is great. He’s slowly coming back after surgery and cancer treatment. He did a couple of short episodes on the Minneapolis mayhem. Worth listening if you haven’t already. Thomas Sowell, another treasure , , is 95. I appreciate the words of the wise every chance I get.

Galaxy's avatar

I know it isn’t a new release, but I just heard VDH interview David Mamet. Delicious.

Pamela Christiansen's avatar

Thank you! I’ll check that out.

John Noonan's avatar

I agree. Matt seems more lost like I personally feel, and Walter did an amazing job speaking to him. They are both phenomenal and the show was truly unique. Walter, much like Scott Adams, was what Scott would call, “Internet Dads”.

Art's avatar

I’m still hoping for a reconciliation. It’s in the interest of their audience and each of them as well. I don’t think the written word is a long term business plan. How many millennials through Gen Z read anything at all, much less the kind of long form journalism found in Racket and County Highway? This is the era of audio and video, hence the popularity of podcasts. America this Week created an audience for both gentlemen’s written platforms and they will likely see their businesses diminish significantly. Hopefully that will dawn upon the, and they will muster the will to patch things up.

Mark Blair's avatar

I suspect many signed up for Racket primarily for ATW too.

Gary Edwards's avatar

I would agree that ATW made a market for Racket, not the other way around.

Kaysathome's avatar

Hoping they just needed a break. I’m sure they will both miss each other greatly in time.

julia's avatar

You can never step into the same river twice. If there was a reunion, the hurt would always be there. Life changes. We can't go back.

JMaryH's avatar

I'm just sick. I loved their interplay -- Walter is just older enough than Matt to help guide Matt through some of the thornier issues of the day with a seasoned hand of someone who has lived through a lot of this before, always throwing out yet one more angle through which to view the world's unchained wackiness. It was "appointment TV" as in the old days. RIP.

Anthony Murphy's avatar

Walter made ATW and I am saddened to see it end. Matt’s a great journalist but Walter was that and more. He is an intellectual with a common touch and enough ego not to believe he’s better than anyone else. BTW, to fill the vacuum I broke down and went from freeloader to paid subscriber. I enjoy your work.

I knew the “tolerant” were anything but tolerant when I was a substitute teacher and was in the library on a break. I was looking for something to read. The propaganda rag I found was not a magazine but it was promoting haters towards Christians and white people. All the while claiming to be inclusive, progressive and morally superior. It was outrageous. This was 2010 or 2011. To me it was a war on white Christian straight males. It was hard to ignore.

julia's avatar

Scary, and it has all come true...and notice what they are doing to young white males now...do you see latino or black young men deciding they must be women?

Grieving Father's avatar

Haven’t had time to listen yet, but an early thank you for this essay. There are only two “must listen” podcasts in my life; yours and America This Week. I am deeply saddened by the loss of ATW. Thank you for helping to express what the rest of us are feeling.

Grieving Father's avatar

Well now I have listened and I'm practically in tears. Nothing lasts forever but I shall miss ATW very much. Sasha thank you for all that you do.

Robert Lime's avatar

I was close to heartbroken by it. And what is the reason for it?! I appreciate Taibbi's wish to hire people to do more reporting, but why did that have to force the end of ATW? I understand that Walter quit. Does anyone know whether this is true? Was it a reaction to the new Editor - in - Chief? Had she idiotically demanded a reduced role for Walter and the Kirn/Taibbi interchange? It's the kind of supremely dumb thing new young "efficiency experts" pull. Walter Kirn is the funniest man in America, and I will not be resubscribing to whatever Taibbi's journal becomes. The New Coke of Internet journalism.

Kaysathome's avatar

Sounded like Matt wanted to dispense with the Monday livestream and do only the taped Thursday/Friday show, to give him more time for reporting and editing. Walter apparently disagreed and quit right before Matt’s last show aired. I love both but I think Walter was maybe being hardheaded on this one. Probably more to it though.

Robert Lime's avatar

I would like to know the story, as I think we all would.

ColdWarBrat's avatar

She's horrible.

She herself needs an editor of you read or listen to her intro piece.

Robert Lime's avatar

I didn't do that, but if she blew up ATW, I'd agree she's a dope.

Gary Edwards's avatar

It sniffs more of a power play than an efficiency expert or branding move.

Robert Lime's avatar

I wouldn't quarrel with that. I'm just baffled.

> I used to say to myself, just hold a little longer. It’s almost Thursday, and that’s when they record their podcast, and it drops on Friday.

Omg, this is me 😭

PhilH's avatar

I love Matt's work and I've been following him in one form or another for years. But with all due respect I think he's pretty naive. He reads random comments on his livestream from YouTube and he actually responds to them! Duuh. Surely he knows how much trolling is going on.

Look I understand that Walter was pretty hardcore about the ice thing and he and Matt disagreed. So what, that was one of the best things about the show, watching them disagree and talk it out.

I saw the comment from Walter where he said he was blindsided. It certainly doesn't sound like it was mutual. And I also sensed that Matt was really disappointed that Walter didn't come onto their last stream to lay out his side. Maybe they need a marriage counselor.🙂

And one last thing. Sasha, I'm really sorry about your loss of income, but I'm glad you were canceled because otherwise you wouldn't be here writing your excellent column for us fine folks.

John Kelleher's avatar

I don’t understand what happened that caused Walter Kirn to leave ATW . Matt pretty much talks around it. I’m Matt but I’m not sure I’ll continue the subscription.
