Twitter – Very Weird Where Celebs Are Concerned

by Sasha Stone on April 19, 2010

Not all celebrities can do everything well.  Some celebrities can Twitter, for instance, and others can’t.  Having an online tete-a-tete with anyone is usually either successful, or a total disaster.  Some people can be more easily squished into the online world, while others need the vibration of real life around them to be totally understood and absorbed.

I really think some people come off better online than others.  That’s my theory and I’m sticking to it.  I prefer my own online persona, for instance, than my in-person one.  I think I’m nice and all, and I’m sure people like me (really really like me) better in the flesh.  But me, I like me better in the non-flesh.  I like me better with words and words only at my disposal.

The celebrities I think that come off better on Twitter than one could ever imagine have managed to use the medium to raise their careers are step higher.  Those would be Demi Moore, Ashton Kutcher – the two most commonly associated with Twitter.  They’re fine on Twitter.  Demi Moore is more than fine.  She’s cute and gracious and non-overbearing.  Just a lot of nicey nice with exclams.

And for some reason it makes me like her where before I maybe didn’t think much about her at all.  Well, let’s just say the irritating Demi is long, long gone – the Disclosure/Indecent Proposal/Striptease Demi.  In her place is this pocket rocket activist cougar.

So that’s the good.

A few others I’ve been following I really like more now than before BECAUSE of their Twitter.  And those would include Errol Morris, David Lynch, Diablo Cody, Ben Stiller, Jason Reitman.

The bad is that I was crushed to discover complete and total despair over Jim Carrey’s Twitter.  Here all of this time I thought he was a nicey nice guy with vast intelligence.  But I’ve discovered him to be self-centered, self-absorbed and not that witty online.  I think he must be surrounded by a lot of yes-men, yes-women who make him think he’s all that. And then there’s the money.

One of the disappointing things about him is that he only follows one person. With so many brilliant people out there saying brilliant things and pointing out links, not to open yourself up to that part of Twitter is to miss the whole thing.

I need to follow more celebrities on Twitter so that I can judge them bitterly from afar.  And here is the perfect site to do just that.

Traffic and Twitter – Ways to Integrate Into Site

by Sasha Stone on February 3, 2010

I’ve noticed that many of the writers I admire are developing quite a nice healthy flow of information on Twitter. As such, I don’t feel the need to check out their websites. I wonder if this is a really bad thing or if I’m just one of the rare exceptions. They do post links but with no information, and so many other tweets from other people, who is going to take the time to click on them?

I am no SEO expert, which is why you don’t see well placed google ads here. Perhaps it’s time to slap a few up. With my stead flow of 10 readers a day I really should start cashing in. So this post about Twitter is just going to be general comments and observations.

Twitter is the best PR tool ever invented. It is the best way to sell yourself in clever little bits on a daily basis. I have noticed from my tiny corner of the world, it works best as a news delivery device (“tobacco is a nicotine delivery device”- The Insider). It works best as a way to give snippets of info to your followers that they can use to either retweet or report on their own blog. But if you give it all away you are going to lose revenue at some point. True, you have your personality and your thousands of followers to think about, but if you’re trying to draw traffic to your site – you have to rethink your Twitter persona.

I can think of about five people who use Twitter to effectively bring people back to either their own website or their mother ship. If you work for, say, the New York Times or USA Today or any other major publications or company, you don’t have to bring people to your site unless you want to. Your job is to up your own pedigree as either a clever observer or a news deliverer. But if you are like me and you ARE your site (not this little satellite but my main site, awardsdaily.com), then your Twitter has to act as a way to both engage your followers while also making sure they WANT to click those links to bring them back to your own backyard.

The top two people who use it don’t even need to use it, really. What they do is use Twitter as an extension to what they do on their sites, not as a replacement. By commenting on what they have been involved in and what they are doing and how their real time activities fit into their daily workload they bring their followers and readers into the process.

It goes without saying that it’s a useful tool for celebrities because they haven’t ever had a way to communicate with their fans directly. And it can be surreal to communicate directly with famous people. But Twitter, and the internet in general, has leveled the playing field between “normal people” and those who have been lifted to a higher level. Egads, I’ve completely lost track of my point. Where is the coffee already.

Okay, so the bottom line is this. If your aim is to bring people back to your site, entertain them on Twitter, give them hints about what you’ve been working on but do not make it easy for them by giving them all of your news all day long. Why on earth would they ever feel the need to visit your site?

But if you don’t need them for traffic, by all means, let the news flow. Be mindful of what you need Twitter for. It is a useful tool. It is less useful for just shooting the shit. Facebook is for that. Twitter will help you sell yourself. Okay, I guess that sort of counts as a point.

Twitter is Like High School All Over Again

by Sasha Stone August 9, 2009 THOUGHTDOM

Okay, I’ve just about had it with Twitter.¬† Actually, I’ve decided to take matters into my own hands.¬† I’m going to now defollow people who annoy me.¬† And by annoy I mean lots of @celebrity here or @filmpersonality there.¬† Annoyed.¬† It’s high school all over again.¬† It’s you follow me but I won’t follow you.¬† I won’t follow you because you’re not worthy of my time.¬† What I say is all that matters.¬† What is up with that?¬† It should be you follow me, I follow you.¬† It just kind of grosses me out all of a sudden.¬† And I’m guilty of it too.¬† I have more followers than I follow.¬† So I’m part of the problem.¬† From now on, though, anyone who follows me I’ll follow them.¬† It’s the only way I can live with myself. Oh and #Twitterfail? #Twitterwhogivesafuck.

A Note About How to Twitter

by Sasha Stone June 30, 2009 THOUGHTDOM

I just clicked on someone’s blog and I saw that they have implemented something like I have on this site, a little widget to announce their Twitters, or tweets, to their readers.¬† Trouble is, they use their Twitter mainly to link back to the things they write about on their blog.¬† This is redundant and absolutely the wrong way to use Twitter.¬† If you must post your tweets on your blog, make sure they illuminate your life in a real-time way.¬† Otherwise, you are spinning your wheels and wasting your time. A great way to use Twitter is illustrated on the Pioneer Woman’s blog.

New Twitter Account

by Sasha Stone June 30, 2009 THOUGHTDOM

I have decided to not wait around for Twitter to fix the problem and have instead started up a new, temporary username.  What a nightmare, though.  My followers may never find me again. http://www.twitter.com/oscarwatch It is fun using Oscarwatch again, however briefly.

More Twitter Woes – Tried [Can't] “Get [No] Satisfaction”

by Sasha Stone June 30, 2009 THOUGHTDOM

Finally, after days and days of no response from Twitter, I tried their support site, Getsatisfaction.com via this site. This is what I wrote: I have built up a following on Twitter. I am a website owner and have been enjoying Twitter for quite some time. Recently, Google flagged my site [awardsdaily.com] as having a virus — so Twitter acted in kind. And they have suspended my account — after several emails and a phone call attempt, Twitter has completely ignored my requests — and it looks as though they will only allow me to cancel my username, awardsdaily, and start a different account. It’s really sad and depressing and, I must say, a broken element to Twitter. I know we live in a time when the individual isn’t so important as the overall traffic and usage; the internet has obliterated good customer service for the most part. And since [...]

Twitter Suspended My Account

by Sasha Stone June 28, 2009 Google Sucks

Twitter and Google have me running scared.¬† Recently, there was a web-wide virus attack where my own site had some weird code in it that alerted Google.¬† So far, so good, right?¬† You don’t want a virus attacking your own computer via a website.¬† But once the virus was cleared up and removed and even Google removed the warning, Twitter continues to leave my account suspended.¬† It’s the most frustrating thing ever.¬† I even navigated through their bizarre contact area in order to ask them (very nicely I thought) to remove my “suspended account” warning.¬† The lesson here is that the bigger these websites get, the bigger Google and Twitter get, the more control they have over everything and everyone.¬† Beware, folks.

Twitter is Embarrassing

by Sasha Stone June 26, 2009 CELEBS

After the news of Michael Jackson’s death came pouring out, celebs took to their Twitter.¬† JustJared posted their tweets. Suddenly it seems like a very small world. Miley Cyrus: Michael Jackson was my inspiration. Love and blessings. Demi Moore: I am greatly saddened for the loss of both Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson. Especially for their children! John Mayer: I think we‚Äôll mourn his loss as well as the loss of ourselves as children listening to Thriller on the record player. Dazed in the studio. A major strand of our cultural DNA has left us. I truly hope he is memorialized as the ‚Äò83 moonwalking, MTV owning, mesmerizing, unstoppable, invincible Michael Jackson. RIP MJ. Ludacris: If it were not for Micheal Jackson I would not be where or who I am today. His Music and Legacy will live on forever. Prayers to the fam R.I.P. Jesse McCartney: RIP Michael Jackson. [...]
