One of the projects I’m working on with Emma’s class is the “This I Believe” essay series.¬† In an attempt to teach them how to write, as they’ve had essentially no writing this year, we have been working poetry (our reading will be April 9!) and these essays.¬† Our next project is a class newspaper.¬† This I Believe is a wonderful series on NPR, that was started back in the 1950s by Edward R. Murrow.¬† The website, with many essays on it, including those from the 1950s, is here.¬† The NPR site is here.
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what I believe.¬† I do believe in a lot of things.¬† Evolution and Natural Selection is one thing.¬† The company of gay men is another.¬† My best friend is still yet another.¬† But I think, if I had to pare it down, and this is what I told Emma’s class, I would say education is what I believe in.¬† I’m working on an essay that I will post when it’s finished and maybe even send it in to NPR.
